Greenwich by the river
Greenwich makes a rewarding destination for a day on the Thames, whether the river is your route there or simply the starting point for exploring on foot. The waterfront brings the Old Royal Naval College and its domes into view, while museums and the historic Cutty Sark offer different ways to spend time ashore. Choose the places you want to enter before arranging the journey back.
Greenwich is served by the river bus network and by sightseeing boats. Check the departure pier and the stops on your selected sailing: a boat leaving Westminster does not necessarily call at every intermediate pier. Our guide to Thames river cruises explains route and ticket choices, while river bus travel covers a different way to use the river.

Buildings and museums in Greenwich
The National Maritime Museum is a useful starting point for a visit centred on the river and the sea. General admission is free and advance booking is recommended; special exhibitions and some activities may have a separate charge. The Queen's House also offers free general entry, with booking recommended. Check the individual venue for temporary room closures and events before deciding how to divide your time.
The Cutty Sark is a separate paid visit. Its booking system uses time slots, so look at the available entry time alongside your boat schedule. The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College is another paid visit. General admission to a museum should not be assumed to cover either attraction. Allow space between bookings so that a late connection or a longer gallery visit does not dominate the day.

Plan a visit to the Painted Hall and check the access arrangements for your chosen date.
The Painted Hall and access
James Thornhill painted the hall between 1707 and 1726. Its decorated walls and ceiling make it a distinct indoor visit within the wider riverside ensemble. The grounds and the paid interiors have different access arrangements, so decide whether you want to see the buildings from outside or enter the hall itself. The Painted Hall lift is currently out of service; visitors who need step-free access should check the present arrangements directly before booking.
The surroundings can also be enjoyed as part of a walk between the waterfront and the museums. Treat the time spent on the river as part of the itinerary rather than assuming that a boat ticket includes entry to buildings ashore. For more context on the riverside setting, see our Thames history guide.
Royal Observatory closure
The Royal Observatory closes for the long term from 2 November 2026 for the First Light project. The Planetarium and Astronomy Centre have been closed since 8 September 2025. Plan another activity in their place and check the venue's current information when arranging a future visit. These closures concern those facilities, not the whole of Greenwich: the museums and waterfront offer separate choices for the day.
Ghost and mystery walking tour
A ghost and mystery walking tour is another type of activity listed for Greenwich. Consider it as a separate walking experience, rather than part of a museum ticket or a river sailing. Check the actual meeting point, timing and inclusions for the date you select, then leave sufficient time to reach it from your pier or earlier visit.
Putting your day together
Start with one timed indoor visit, then add a free general gallery or a walk around the waterfront. If you prefer a quieter schedule, leave the second museum for another day and make the journey itself the other main activity. A one-way boat leaves room to choose a different return route; a return ticket should be checked for its own conditions and departure points.
For a base near your chosen sights, compare Greenwich with the other locations in where to stay along the Thames. The getting there guide helps you think through the connection between your accommodation and the departure pier. Check current services and venue arrangements close to your visit, especially if a specific time slot matters to you.
