Upper Thames: choosing a stretch
The Upper Thames invites a different kind of river day from the central London piers. Kew Gardens, Hampton Court and Henley each offer a separate reason to travel west, but they are not interchangeable stops on a single standard boat ticket. Choose one destination and build the day around its opening arrangements, your arrival and the journey back.
Boat services and conditions vary by stretch and date. Check the individual sailing before fitting a garden or palace entry around it, and plan an alternative return. For an introduction to the river further west, see Oxford on the Thames; Windsor offers another distinct destination.

Kew Gardens by boat
Kew identifies a boat service between Westminster and Kew Pier. From the pier, the route to Elizabeth Gate crosses Kew Green. Sailing times depend on tide and weather, so check the operator's current schedule rather than building a tight connection around an assumed departure. Garden admission and the boat journey are separate decisions: check both when planning.
Kew's winter admission period begins on 1 November 2026. A Tuesday adult ticket offer runs from 8 September to 29 December 2026 and should not be treated as a daily fare. Opening hours vary by date and individual attractions can have their own hours. Check the garden calendar for your chosen day before buying a ticket or arranging a boat.
Explore the Thames
Consider other ways to experience the river while planning your visit to its western reaches.
Hampton Court boat and palace visit
A Hampton Court day can combine the riverside setting with the palace or gardens. Look up the sailing and the return separately, particularly outside the season shown on a timetable. The October 2026 Kingston to Hampton Court schedule describes that period; it should not be assumed to apply in November. Leave enough time to reach the entrance and to return after your visit.
Several specific closures affect the palace site in late 2026. Great Vine and Sunken Garden are closed from 26 October to 23 November; Cumberland Art Gallery is closed on 31 October and 1 November. Mantegna Gallery is closed until spring 2027, and Chapel Royal is closed on 6 November 2026. These are individual closures, not a closure of the entire palace. Check the current calendar for the areas that matter to you.
The Winter Palace period runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Free garden days on 21 and 22 November 2026 do not replace tickets for the palace, maze or Magic Garden. Confirm what your chosen entry covers and compare it with the available travel times before fixing the day.
Henley Regatta and the riverside
Henley is another choice for a day focused on the Thames rather than a central London sightseeing cruise. The 2026 Henley Royal Regatta took place from 30 June to 5 July. For any future event, consult its published programme before making travel or admission plans. Outside an event, a riverside walk gives you a different way to enjoy the setting without relying on a particular sailing.
Boat availability and booking conditions can change, so check the date, boarding point and return options directly. Do not use a London river bus ticket as a substitute for checking the service on this stretch. If walking is your priority, the Thames Path guide explains how to plan a manageable stage and check diversions.
River conditions and onward plans
Conditions on the upper river can affect navigation. Drought restrictions introduced in August 2026 should not be assumed to have ended; check the current notices when arranging a boat trip. Benson Lock is closed to navigation from 9 November to 21 December 2026. Such restrictions apply to navigation and should not be read as a blanket closure of every riverside path.
Match your accommodation to the destination you have chosen. Our riverside bases guide compares Hampton Court and Kingston with London locations, and getting there covers the wider transport decision. A shorter itinerary with a checked return is more useful than assuming a continuous boat connection from London to Oxford.
